Arief earned his Ph.D degree in sociology from Department of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Indonesia with cum laude predicate. His research focus on Political and Organizational Sociology in the context of Islamic politics. His Ph.D Dissertation is entitled “Between Jamaah and Political Party: The Dynamics of The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Cadres’ Habitus in Indonesia Political Field after 2004 Election”. Arief’s dissertation is the result of a qualitative research in the form of case study which identified the pattern of grouping/factionalism in PKS, and described how those groups/factions work within the internal dynamics of PKS, especially after 2004 election. On the “hard-side” the dynamics is described as a competition among groups/factions to build efficient relationship with the highest authority holder that implies the creation of oligarchic structure. While on the “soft -side” the dynamics is shown as a symbolic contestation, a continous dialectic between heterodoxy and orthodoxy, in order to build a new doxa. The result of this research recommends PKS to apply democratisation, de-oligarchy-sation, and organisational desacredisation to improve its objective position in Indonesian political field.

Arief spent most of his career development period in PT Bina Inti Muda Utama (BIMU) that holds brand name “Brainware Management System” (BMS), a management consulting firm focused on human resource development, especially soft–competency development.
